Adam Christ always thought he and Matt Magers worked well together when they were assistant coaches in the Minnesota State baseball program.

Now, he’ll get another chance.

“Coach Magers has been a big help to me,” Christ said. “I think if you put the two of us together, we make a good combination.”

Christ, 28, was hired as an assistant coach to Magers, who was named the head coach of the Mavericks’ baseball program last month. Christ, a Waseca native, was a graduate assistant with the program from 2003-04, working with infielders and hitters, which will again be his responsibilities.

“I love MSU, it has a great tradition,” Christ said. “My family is in the area, I like southern Minnesota. It’s always been my goal to get back, and this is a great opportunity.”

For the last 31⁄2 years, Christ has been the general manager of The Ripken Academy, formed by brothers Cal and Bill Ripken. He was responsible for organizing the baseball clinics, camps and tournaments in Aberdeen, Md.

He graduated from Waseca in 1998, the played two seasons at Des Moines Area Community College. He transferred to Iowa State, which dropped the baseball program, and he moved on to Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

“I think he’s the right guy for the job,” Magers said. “He’s a good person, he’s passionate about the game. He makes everybody around him better.”

Christ will assume his new position July 18, and he’s excited to get back to a college program.

“I look forward to getting back and teaching,” he said. “I like to work with a team and pull it all together and see it succeed.”
