Whitmore, MoonDogs shut out Express

EAU CLAIRE, Wis.

If the Mankato MoonDogs were content to rest on their laurels after clinching the first-half North Division title of the Northwoods League a day earlier, they didn’t show it.

Less than 24 hours later, the ’Dogs’ Bennett Whitmore fired a six-hit shutout as Mankato downed the Eau Claire Express 4-0. Whitmore did not walk a batter and had only three strikeouts, but did not allow an extra-base hit and induced three players to hit into double plays.

While Whitmore was keeping the Express at bay, the ’Dogs were battering three pitchers for 14 hits. Cody Fick led the way, going 3 for 5 with a home run.

Bryan Haar also homered and finished 2 for 4. Kenny Held knocked in a run with a pair of singles and A.J. Pettersen and Jimmy Patterson finished with two hits apiece.

Mankato scored the only run it needed in the top of the second.

The ’Dogs (23-9) return home to Franklin Rogers Park today for a 7:05 p.m. game against Brainerd.
