Mankato West’s Ashley Veroeven struck out 12 and walked none in a two-hit shutout over Minnetonka in the Section 2AAA softball tournament Tuesday at Caswell Park.
The Scarlets, the tournament’s No. 1 seed, defeated the Skippers 10-0 in six innings.
“Minnetonka is a tough team,” West coach Don Krusemark said. “There’s a lot of tradition with those guys.”
Veroeven also went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Vanessa Lloyd also had two hits, including a two-run single that sparked the Scarlets’ four-run third inning. Lloyd finished with three RBIs. Alyssa Black had three hits, three runs and two RBIs, and Lauren Weber and Nikki Starkson each had two hits and an RBI.
“The wind was coming in, and we still scored 10 runs,” Krusemark said. “Hats off to my girls. That’s hard to do. They just put the ball into play and forced (Minnetonka) to make plays.”
West will face No. 4 seed Eden Prairie at 7 p.m. Thursday at Caswell Park.
Eden Prairie defeated Shakopee 2-1.
In first-round action Tuesday, Minnetonka defeated Chaska 4-0, and Shakopee defeated Waconia 4-3.
