MSU drops opener at regional tourney

Nebraska-Omaha’s Chris Kessinger outdueled Minnesota State’s Chris Odegaard for a 2-1 victory Thursday in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Central Regional Baseball Tournament.
Kessinger allowed six hits, no earned runs and struck out five without walking a batter. Odegaard was nearly as effective, also yielding six hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts and one walk.
Nebraska-Omaha scored its first run in the bottom of the fifth on Dustin Koca’s RBI single. UNO delivered what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on Bryan Frew’s RBI single.
Minnesota State scored its only run in the top of the ninth. Kosuke Hattori led off with a bunt single, moved to third on an infield error and sprinted home on Travis Taran’s base hit through the right side.
