Garrett Fischer allowed two long home runs in the first three innings, putting New Ulm in a 3-1 hole, but the junior pitcher knew his teammates could overcome that deficit.

“Lately, we’ve been hitting the ball pretty well,” Fischer said. “Two, three runs, we should always be able to get that back.”

New Ulm scored the last five runs to defeat Waseca 6-3 in a South Central Conference baseball game Thursday at Tink Larson Field. The Eagles clinched at least a share of the conference championship with two games remaining.

“That’s always our first goal of the season,” New Ulm coach Jay Backer said. “Win the conference, win the section, make a state tournament appearance, those are our three goals. One of those goals is now taken care of.”

Andrew Beckmann got Waseca on the board with a two-run homer in the first inning, a shot that carried well over the 370-foot sign in left-center field. After New Ulm scored on Aaron Lilleodden’s RBI double, Chris Glynn got the run back with a home run to right field that cleared a row of cars behind the fence.

“That first one, right when I threw it, I knew he was going to bomb it,” Fischer said. “The second one was a pretty good pitch, he just extended and hit it out.”

New Ulm tied the game in the fourth on an RBI single from Luke Altmann and a wild pitch and error. In the fifth, Taylor Rolloff singled, took second on a sacrifice, stole third and scored on a wild pitch. In the sixth, Rolloff tripled home David Meyer and scored when the throw went into the dugout.
