MANKATO

In a game played amid some unconventional weather conditions, the Mankato West baseball team used a conventional style of play to down Austin 3-1 Friday in a Big Nine Conference game at Franklin Rogers Park.

Junior right-hander Brock Lloyd provided the Scarlets (8-5 both overall and in Big Nine) with a solid pitching effort and his defensive mates were nearly flawless behind him. Lloyd, who also had two of West’s four hits, struck out seven and walked none in scattering eight hits.

“Brock threw a lot of strikes, he was one pitch short of three strikes to one ball,” West coach Ethan Anderson. “The key to his success the last two outings is he’s walked zero. On a day like today, it’s a matter of putting it in the strike zone and making hitters hit.

“We made the plays and that’s what it takes on a day like this. It’s extremely difficult to score runs because the outfielders don’t have to play at normal depth. You almost have to get a guy to third and then have a hit. We were more aggressive trying to get to third base. ... You have to do things the untraditional way.”

Austin (5-10, 4-10) collected three hits in its first at-bat to score its lone run of the contest. Steven Rizzi and Mark Harber lined singles before Nathan Wagner lofted a run-scoring single into shallow right field. Lloyd escaped further trouble by inducing an inning-ending double play.

After the Scarlets left the bases loaded in the bottom of the first, three Austin errors and junior shortstop Derrick Catttrysse’s RBI double produced two unearned runs an inning later.
