ST. CLAIR
—
Coach Jason Anderson gathered his St. Clair baseball players around him and asked them one question:
“You guys ready?”
Some of them have been ready for more than two seasons. Others around town have been ready for more than 30 years.
On Tuesday afternoon, in a 90-minute window between heavy rains, St. Clair High School played its first home baseball game since the early 1970s.
“It’s nice to get baseball back here,” Anderson said. “The community has put a lot into this.”
This is the third season the Cyclones have fielded a baseball team since bringing the program out of hiatus. But the school’s new field was not ready until this spring.
Until Tuesday, St. Clair played its home games on fields in Mankato.
“It felt different, not getting on a bus to somewhere, whether it was Mankato or an away field,” senior Nick Ferguson said.
Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial’s Kyle Balstad got the first hit on the new field. Doug Gudahl smacked the first hit there for the home team.
The Cyclones lost the Valley Conference game 9-0 in five innings. The game was called in the top of the sixth inning when the rains came back.
Rain washed out two other home openers earlier this season, so the St. Clair folks were just happy to finally get a game in.
“It’s excellent,” said Tom Gudahl, Doug’s dad and the outgoing president of the St. Clair athletics booster club. “We haven’t had baseball here in 30 years. It’s just nice to have it back.”
The baseball diamond is the third field in the school’s new athletic complex. Four years ago, the football field was finished, and last year, the adjacent softball field saw its first games. A track is in the works.
“It’s taken a lot of community effort to get things to where they’re at right now,” activities director Jeff Tietje said.
