Published May 07, 2008 01:18 am - Four Mavericks garner top honors Four student athletes have received top honors from Minnesota State University for their achievements during the 2007-2008 school year.
MSU’s athletic department hosted the 22nd annual Maverick Achievement Awards and Senior Honors Dinner on Sunday where it was announced that senior wrestlers Jason Rhoten and Andy Pickar, along with senior softball player Lynndi Decker and senior soccer player Nicole Johannson have earned the top awards. Rhoten has earned the Don Buchanan Award, which is presented annually to the student-athlete who best combines academic and athletic achievements. Rhoten is a graduate student majoring in biology/ecology and carries a cumulative grade-point average of 3.29. Pickar has earned the Male Athletics Medal of Honor, which is based solely on athletic achievement. The team co-captain went 23-3 during his senior season. Decker has been bestowed with the Georgene Brock Award, which is given annually to the student-athlete who best combines academic and athletic achievements. Decker has a 4.00 GPA and is majoring in graphic design. One of the most durable Mavericks, this softball outfielder had a streak of 203 consecutive games played before being forced to sit a game in March due to injury. Johannson has earned the Female Athletics Medal of Honor, which is based solely on athletic achievements. The goaltender had a 16-2-1 won-loss record as a senior with a 0.61 goals against average.
