    Mankato East/Loyola girls hockey coach Nate Fuller has learned that he needs to measure progress in small steps. Despite dropping a 5-2 decision to Hutchinson at All Seasons Arena, he believes his Cougars took one of those steps Thursday night in the nonconference game.

    Scarlets goalie Therese Coughlan made 25 saves as Mankato West held off Austin 3-2 in a Big Nine Conference game Thursday night.

    Brianna Radtke doesn’t mind being the centerpiece of a Gustavus Adolphus women’s basketball team primed for a run at a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title.
  •  Gustie men look for a return to prominence

    The Gusties open the season with a nonconference game Tuesday against Buena Vista University at Storm Lake, Iowa. Gustavus is coming off the first losing season (13-14) in coach Mark Hanson’s 18-season tenure.
  •  MSU’s Hodges called into active duty

    Cameron Hodges, a guard on the Mavericks’ men’s basketball team, found out Sunday night, after Minnesota State’s season-opening victory over Monmouth College, that he had been called into active duty and should report to Fort Benning in Georgia on Jan. 3, 2010.
  •  Scarlets, Saints poised for busy state meet

    It’s unlikely that Mankato West coach Dave Burgess and St. Peter coach Mary Lager compared notes before designing tapers for their respective swim teams this fall but whatever each coach did, it worked.

    Defending Division II national champion Minnesota State showed off its youth movement Tuesday night at Bresnan Arena, walloping Dana College 85-30 in a season-opening nonconference win.
