After an inauspicious start — they forget to put the drain plug in the boat and it sank at the landing — Gary Bednar and Eric Collins, both of Le Center, took top honors in the 22nd annual Take-A-Kid Fishing Crappie Tournament, Friday on Lake Washington.
The pair was delayed a half-hour when their boat filled with water after they launched it without replacing the drain plug. They were forced to wade into the icy water without waders to get it back on the trailer to drain.
The anglers’ winning weight of 5.44 pounds for ten crappies, including a 1.06-pounder, was enough to take first place and $700 in the contest with a field of 42 teams.
Tim Mayo and Terry Kamm of St. Peter took second place with a 10-fish limit weighing in at 5.37 pounds. Tom Bauleke of Le Sueur and Roger Kramer placed third with a 10-fish limit weighing 5.3 pounds.
Big fish honors and $250 went to Curt and Chuck Schueneman of Mankato with a crappie tipping the scales at 1.2 pounds.
