Minnesota’s permit-to-carry handgun legislation passed into law in 2003. But as five-year renewal deadlines for those permits come to pass, numbers of those seeking to re-up are lagging.

Handgun renewal numbers down

Many reasons cited for permits lapsing

Other reasons being bandied about for lagging renewal numbers: Guns are heavy and uncomfortable, and can be difficult to conceal with light clothing, and some owners may simply have forgotten to renew.

The impetus for permit-to-carry legislation was fueled by gun enthusiasts who contended that such a law would deter crime.

Opponents argued the measure would increase crime and lead to needless deaths.

Neither appears to be the case, according to state crime statistics.

Said Blue Earth County Sheriff Brad Peterson, “We still have people applying for permits, but it’s not like it was when the law went into effect.”

Blue Earth County records show there have been 93 renewals approved of this year, compared with 170 permits issued in the county five years ago.
