Police were saying little about their investigation of a dead person found behind an apartment building on North Fourth Street Wednesday morning.

Police were called to the 28-unit apartment building at 123 N. Fourth St. around 9 a.m. Several Mankato police detectives investigated the area where the body was found while officers restricted access to the back door of the apartment with yellow police tape.

“We’re investigating the death of a young person,” said Matt DuRose, Mankato detective commander.

Pam Pieten, the apartment manager, said police told her the victim was not a resident of the building.

The police tape was removed from the alley behind the apartment immediately after the body was taken away. There was no blood in the sunken area below the alley, where the body had been. The area has benches and is used by apartment residents who smoke.

One resident, who said he didn’t want to be identified, said the body wasn’t there when he brought garbage out between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. Tuesday night.
