Your View — Headlines shouldn’t be editorials

Mary Smalley, Wells

Questions came to mind when I read the Aug. 30 Free Press:

One. Regarding the headline on Page A1 “McCain takes gamble.” If he took a gamble choosing Sarah Palin, would not the other people he considered for vice president have been considered a gamble also? Was Obama’s choice of Joe Biden a gamble? Would his other considerations been a gamble?

Two. Regarding the headline on B2 “Pawlenty turns back to Minnesota” followed by a sub-headline, “Despite snub Pawlenty was on national stage.” Does this mean that all of the candidates who were talked a great deal about nationally, by the press and TV, are to be considered snubbed because they were not chosen?

The implication that Pawlenty turns back to Minnesota suggests that he shirked his responsibilities while he was being considered.

What were the attitudes of other candidates, both Republican and Democrat? Did they all shirk their respective duties while waiting to be chosen?

It seems to me that headlines in the news section of a newspaper should state facts and not be used to editorialize the journalist’s opinions. That has a place on editorial page.
