Published July 18, 2006 10:37 am - Recently, Democrats in the Minnesota Senate decided to put the kibosh on a constitutional amendment dedicating funding to protecting and preserving the state’s wetlands and other natural resources.
For Minnesotans, like me, who enjoy hunting and the great outdoors, this act is a blatant betrayal to the people of this great state.
Dedicating funding to our environment not only benefits outdoors people but it works for all Minnesotans. Planning to conserve our habitats and the species that live in it takes more than one to two years. It takes many years. Dedicated funding will help stabilize the revenue source to help conservationists like myself achieve that goal.
We’re not asking for much. In fact, we’re only asking for one-fourth of 1 percent of the state sales tax — one-eighth dedicated for fish and wildlife habitat and one-eighth for Clean Water Legacy. It’s that simple.
Although our current legislators really let us down, we have a chance now to turn the tide and take matters into our own hands. We have to do what is right to save Minnesota’s natural resources.
Andy Davis is running for Minnesota State House of Representatives in District 23A. He supports dedicated funding for the conservation of our wetlands and clean water.
I encourage you to support candidates who support dedicated funding.
