Your View — Cornish’s record doesn’t indicate a peacemaker

Peter Blethen, Madison Lake

I live in District 24B and I am represented by Tony Cornish. Thankfully, this is an election year and the residents of this district will have the opportunity to show Cornish his views are just too far right of center for the majority us.

Cornish has authored House File 4198 which will make it legal for college students to carry weapons to class. How is it possible that Cornish believes this to be a good thing? I am sure that Minnesota State University will be performing damage control to inform the parents of 14,000 students that Cornish is not the voice of our community. Currently, Minnesota Statutes, section 624.714, Subdivision 18 prohibits guns in public post-secondary institutions. This statute was written for the protection of the students and faculty and should not be changed.

Cornish also voted for an expansion of the Castle Doctrine which would allow the use of deadly force in self defense if a person was threatened with “substantial” bodily harm or to prevent a felony from being committed in their cars, porches and garages. This would have been an expansion of current law, which allows the use of deadly force in homes.

Thankfully, the Public Safety and Civil Justice Committee rejected this statute revision.

I am frightened by Cornish’s voting record and his persistent quest to make guns more prevalent in our communities. Cornish describes himself as a peace officer. His legislative record does not meet my definition of peace.

Stick to the basics, Rep. Cornish. Fund our schools, don’t arm the students.
