Funeral services for Lyall S. Berg of New Richland, MN, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 8, 2009, at the St. John Lutheran Church in Alma City, MN. Pastor Keith Bilitz will officiate. Visitation will be held Saturday evening from 4 until 7 p.m. at the Friedrich Funeral Home in New Richland, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the Alma City Cemetery.

Lyall died Thursday, November 5, 2009, at the New Richland Care Center. He was 96 years of age. Lyall was born September 7, 1913, in Cottonwood, MN, the son of Louis and Alvina (Fratzke) Berg. He was baptized on October 11, 1913, in Cottonwood, MN, and confirmed on July 18, 1937, in Alma City, MN. He graduated from Cottonwood High School and St Cloud State College. On January 2, 1936, he was united in marriage to Marie Marzinske in Alma City, MN.

Lyall had owned the General Store in Alma City until 1952. He then worked for Musser Produce in New Richland, MN, and Smith Douglas in Albert Lea, MN. He then went to work for the Borden Company in Albert Lea and was transferred to Hampshire, IL retiring October 1, 1976. Lyall was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Alma City where he had been on the Church Council, Treasurer, Secretary and Elder.

Lyall is survived by his children; Louis (Elaine) Berg of Mazeppa, MN, William (Sylvia) Berg of New Richland, MN, Robert (Evelyn) Berg of New Ulm, MN, Barbara (Dennis) Grunwald of Ellendale, MN, and daughter in law Kathleen Berg. There are 23 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren and 19 great great grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister; Doris Post of Balaton, MN, brother in law Dallas Doss of LeCresent, MN, and sister in law Loretta Marzinske of Abbottsford, WI.

Lyall was preceded in death by his parents, son Stanford, grandson Dean Berg, great grandson Trevor Dettmer, sisters Gloria Hatlestad and Barbara Berg.
