Published July 13, 2008 07:45 pm - Charles R. “Charlie” Fleming, 81, of rural Garden City, died Saturday, July 12, 2008, at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis.

A Graveside Service will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at the Garden City Cemetery, Garden City. A Celebration of Charlie’s life will be held from 4-7 p.m., Wednesday at the family farm. Mankato Mortuary assisted with arrangements.
Charles was born May 13, 1927, to Robert H. and Annette M. (LaPierre) Fleming in Long Beach, CA. He graduated from Garden City High School in 1945. Charlie served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1945-1947. He was united in marriage to Peggy Sowers on September 27, 1947, at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, Vernon Center. Charlie was a farmer retiring in 1989. Charlie, Peggy and family spent the winters working in Hemet, California, from 1951-1961. They wintered in Apache Junction, Arizonia, for the past seventeen years. Charlie enjoyed repairing and selling guns. He was a member of the Amboy American Legion and the National Rifle Association.
Charles is survived by his wife, Peggy; three children, Douglas (Sylvia) Fleming of Mizpah, MN, Charlene (Doug) Fickel, Bert (Beth) Fleming all of rural Garden City; granddaughter, Ann Fleming of Mankato; four sisters-in-law, Henrietta Fleming of Mankato, Ivalea (Tony) Wendlandt of rural Vernon Center, Cordie Sowers of LaMesa, CA, and Irene Forus of Waconia; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Morris and James.
