MANKATO — Down Lo has been billed as a band that blends SoCal lyricisms with Minnesota funk — a combination of distinct flavors making for a unique kind of hip-hop.
The Minneapolis band, to play at The Underground Friday, plays raggae, jazz, bluegrass, funk and even country. Known for making music crowds can dance to, the music is more than just a beat, according to CD Baby. “The complexity of both the words and the instrumentation bumps it up to levels that surpass that generalization, leaving the listener with plenty to take in, process and feel.”
The band is: guitarist-singer Mark Grundhoefer, bassist Ryan Nielsen, drummer Mike Cini, and Will Nissen (on keys, sax, and vocals).
“Lead My Way” was the band’s first official album. “In Our World” followed, featuring L.A.-based rapper Deploi.
