Pet sharing becoming a trend
'Time-share pets' convenient for those who don't want round-the-clock responsibility

Georgie Salaski wants to find a good home for her pooch — in addition to her own.

Welcome to a new wrinkle in our overextended culture — the time-share dog.

The North Mankato resident bought her male cock-a-poo pup (cocker-poodle hybrid) six months ago.

She says she’s no stranger to dog ownership — she had one 13 years before it died — but this time around 24/7 pet ownership has been more than she bargained for.

So she put an ad in the local shopper publication to solicit a part-time owner.

“I just sort of came up with the idea,” says Salaski, who is unsure of how the logistics and possible expenses of time-sharing her dog would work.

All she knows for sure is that she could use some relief. A day here, A weekend there. Whatever the other party wants.

“I’m totally flexible.”

Salaski says the arrangement could be a win-win for everyone if the other party is of a similar mindset. That is, they want a dog but not the responsibility that goes along with full-time stewardship.

Salaski’s desire to share her dog reflects a national trend in pet ownership. So much so, in fact, that a company called Flexpetz launched last year to serve as a pet rental agency for people wishing to cavort with animals on their own schedules.

Flexpetz has since pulled the plug on itself after lawmakers and animal-rights groups complained the company was promoting dogs as accessories.

However, the not-for-profit shared-ownership concept involving private parties is a different animal, and the U.S. Humane Society is OK with informal pet-sharing arrangements among friends and neighbors.

Salaski says she’s had a couple of people inquire about her ad, but no more than that so far.

Yet dog companionship under one’s own terms may be a concept whose time has come.

Guest amenities at some hotels now include the lending out of canines housed on-site. Check in, shower up, date a dog.
