Waiver wire vital at this time of the season

For most fantasy leagues just four games remain until the end of the regular season. It’s time to shore up that roster for your playoff run.

By now, virtually all the waiver wires have been picked clean but there may still be a few guys out there who can help you. If you still holding on to the Tory Holts and Marvin Harrisons of the world, its time to let them go.

We’ll start with some wide receivers. Matt Ryan is maturing as the Atlanta Falcons quarterback and, as a result, Michael Jenkins is starting to play a bigger role in the offense. He’s had four straight weeks of at least 50 yards receiving. His best game was Sunday when he caught six passes for 72 yards.

In Kansas City, new quarterback Tyler Thigpen is making the Chiefs’ passing game relevant once again. Tight end Tony Gonzalez had a huge day Sunday with 10 catches for 113 yards and two touchdowns. Wideout Mark Bradley is also becoming a factor. He had nine catches for 81 yards and a score Sunday and is averaging six receptions per game over the last three weeks.

If San Diego’s Malcolm Floyd is still available, he can probably help your team. The receiver caught four passes for 76 yards and a touchdown Sunday.

Miami’s Ted Ginn Jr. may also be a decent addition. He’s been a key player in the Dolphins’ offense two of the last three weeks. On Sunday he caught four passes for 67 yards and a touchdown.

Running backs are always a sought-after commodity in fantasy football and that’s especially true at this point in the season. Two players who may be of assistance are Denver’s Peyton Hillis and Miami’s Ricky Williams.

Hillis has become the Broncos’ No. 1 running back by default as virtually everybody else in the backfield is injured. He had only 24 yards on 10 carries on Thursday but, a starter is a starter and there’s a decent chance he’ll be fantasy factor the rest of the way.

Williams has quietly been playing a bigger role in the Dolphins’ offense the last few weeks. He has touchdowns in three of the last five games and even had more carries than starter Ronnie Brown on Sunday. Williams is coming off a 105-yard, one-touchdown performance in Week 10.

New England’s BenJarvus Green-Ellis had a breakout game Sunday, rushing for 105 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries. Until the rest of the backfield gets healthy, he should be a decent start.

Another guy to consider who may still be on your wire is Detroit’s Kevin Smith. He was a fashionable draft choice at the start of the year but has probably been dropped in most leagues. On Sunday he carried 23 times for 96 yards and a touchdown.

If you’re in need of a quarterback, KC’s Tyler Thigpen, Baltimore’s Joe Flacco, Tennessee’s Kerry Collins and Houston’s Sage Rosenfels are probably all still available and all very capable of helping your fantasy team.

Thigpen had his biggest game Sunday, throwing for 266 yards and three touchdowns. Flacco threw for 185 yards and two TDs this week and has been improving every week.

Collins also had his biggest game with 289 yards and two TDs. Rosenfels seems to be interception prone, but if that doesn’t count against you in your league, he’s worth a look. He threw for 294 yards and a touchdown in Week 10.

Tight ends to consider include Baltimore’s Todd Heap (5 catches, 58 yards, 2 touchdowns), the Jets’ Dustin Keller (6 catches, 107 yards, 1 TD) and Denver’s Tony Scheffler (4 catches, 92 yards).
