Published October 13, 2008 11:52 pm - The Dallas Cowboys will turn to veteran Brad Johnson to replace the injured Tony Romo, and fantasy players will be following the situation.

Fantasy Forum: Johnson's back, baby

Just when you thought you’d seen the last of Brad Johnson as a fantasy factor, Dallas quarterback Tony Romo goes and breaks his finger.

Romo is expected to be out at least four weeks with a broken pinkie, which means Johnson will be leading the Cowboys during his absence. Johnson has never been a big yardage quarterback so his fantasy value will not be great. Still, with receivers such as Jason Witten and Terrell Owens to throw to, Johnson does have some upside.

Romo owners are probably not the only ones looking for help at quarterback. Detroit’s Jon Kitna and Seattle’s Matt Hasselback each missed games on Sunday and the timetable for their return is unknown. That means their fantasy owners are probably shopping for quarterback help, as well.

It’s possible Houston’s Matt Schaub is still on your waiver wire and he’s a better pick-up than Johnson. Cleveland’s Derek Anderson may have been dropped, as well, and he had a strong showing Monday against the N.Y. Giants.

Others who might provide more help than the 40-year-old Johnson could be Jacksonville’s David Garrard, Chicago’s Kyle Orton, Atlanta’s Matt Ryan and the New York Jets Chad Pennington.

None of those guys will perform as consistently as a Tony Romo, but each has the potential to keep your team competitive until his pinkie heals.

The depth on running back on the waiver wire is probably a lot less. The most popular pick-up at that position this week will likely be Dominic Rhodes of the Indianapolis Colts. With starter Joseph Addai sidelined by a hamstring problem, Rhodes rushed 25 times for 73 yards and a touchdown against the Baltimore Ravens Sunday.

Denver’s Michael Pittman might be a decent addition if he’s available. He rushed 20 times for 109 yards on Sunday and could be in line for a bigger role the next few weeks.

The only other two backs on the wire who might be able to help are Oakland’s Justin Fargas and Cincinnati’s Cedric Benson.

Fargas seems to have moved back ahead of Michael Bush on the Raiders’ depth chart and should get his share of carries as starter Darren McFadden continues to nurse a sore toe.

Benson rushed four times for only 6 yards against the N.Y. Jets Sunday, but head coach Marvin Lewis is hinting that starter Chris Perry’s job could be in jeopardy and Benson is the likely replacement.

The waiver wire depth is not much better at wide receiver.

Houston’s Kevin Walter may be one of the better options after tallying 98 yards on four catches against Miami. Washington’s Antwaan Randle El might also be of help. He caught five passes for 87 yards in Week 6.

Another available receiver could be Chicago’s Rashied Davis. With Brandon Lloyd out, Davis has become Kyle Orton’s favorite wideout.

If you’re looking for tight end help, Tennessee’s Bo Scaife might be worth a look. New Titan’s starter Kerry Collins seems to favor Scaife over veteran Alge Crumpler, and Scaife could have some value the rest of the way.
